Pensana Plc: The Magnetic Force Behind a Greener Future

Pensana Plc is powering the green energy transition by developing one of the world’s few independent supply chains for rare earth magnet metals. From Angola’s Longonjo mine to the UK’s Saltend processing hub, Pensana is building the materials that drive EVs, wind turbines, and the future of clean tech—ethically and sustainably.

In today’s race to build a cleaner, electrified world, one company is quietly becoming a magnet for progress. Pensana Plc, a rare earths developer listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: PRE), is creating a vital supply chain for the permanent magnets that power electric vehicles, wind turbines, robotics, and smart technologies.

From the mineral-rich highlands of Angola to an advanced processing facility in the UK, Pensana is developing one of the world’s few independent and sustainable sources of neodymium and praseodymium—two of the most critical elements in the permanent magnet supply chain.

Longonjo: Africa’s Magnetic Treasure Trove

At the core of Pensana’s mission lies the Longonjo Rare Earth Project in Angola—a world-class deposit containing high-grade neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr). These metals are essential for manufacturing the high-performance permanent magnets that power the motors of electric vehicles, wind turbines, drones, and other clean energy systems.

In 2025, the company began full-scale construction of Longonjo after securing $268 million in project financing, backed by:

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC)

ABSA Bank

Angola’s Sovereign Wealth Fund (FSDEA)

With an estimated 20-year mine life and 139,000 tonnes of contained NdPr oxide, Longonjo is among the largest and highest-grade undeveloped rare earth projects globally.

Saltend: The UK’s First Rare Earth Magnet Materials Hub

But mining is only half the story. Pensana is also building a $195 million separation facility at Saltend Chemicals Park in the UK—one of the first rare earth processing plants built outside of China in over a decade.

Once operational, Saltend will produce:

12,500 tonnes of rare earth oxides annually

Including 4,500 tonnes of NdPr oxide

Enough to meet 5% of global demand for magnet metals

Saltend will play a key role in reshoring rare earth supply chains to the West, reducing dependency on single-source nations, and helping drive the UK’s energy transition—powered by low-carbon offshore wind.

Coola: Pensana’s Next Magnetic Frontier

Just 16 kilometers north of Longonjo lies the Coola Exploration Project, where Pensana is conducting targeted exploration for additional rare earth-bearing carbonatites. Backed by a technical assistance grant from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, Coola could extend the company’s reach and reserves for years to come.

Strategic Alliances & ESG Leadership

Pensana isn’t just building infrastructure—it’s building trust.

A strategic offtake agreement with Japan’s Hanwa Co. Ltd. secures a long-term buyer for its magnet materials.

Its gold-rated EcoVadis ESG score places it in the top 5% of companies worldwide for sustainability and social responsibility.

Pensana’s community programs and Livelihood Restoration Plan in Angola are already delivering tangible benefits to local populations through jobs, education, and infrastructure.

Why Pensana Matters

Global demand for NdPr magnet metals is expected to triple by 2035, driven by electric mobility and renewable energy.

Pensana is one of the only companies outside China building an end-to-end, ethical, and independent supply chain—from mine to magnet material.

With projects that span continents but are united by a common mission, Pensana is poised to become a magnetic force for sustainable innovation in the 21st century.

Pensana isn’t just mining rare earths—it’s redefining the future of magnets, mobility, and the modern energy economy.
