Trump congratulates Angola at 50, pledges stronger ties

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday congratulated Angola on its 50th anniversary of independence, commending the country’s strides in peace, economic growth and regional leadership.

In a message addressed to Angolan President João Lourenço, Trump pledged deeper cooperation in trade, infrastructure and investment, describing Angola as a “regional leader” driving prosperity across southern Africa.

“Over the past half century, Angola has achieved hard-won peace, stability and economic growth,” Trump wrote.

“Your nation now stands as a regional leader, driving prosperity, promoting peace and reconciliation efforts across southern Africa. It is a history your founders would be proud of.”

The message coincided with Angola’s golden jubilee celebrations in Luanda where regional and international leaders gathered to mark five decades since the country gained independence from Portuguese colonial rule on 11 November 1975.

Trump highlighted Angola’s cultural richness and natural resources as key drivers of bilateral opportunity, citing the US-backed Lobito Corridor project as a cornerstone of regional trade and integration.

The corridor, which links Angola’s Atlantic coast to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is seen as a strategic route for unlocking new markets and boosting cross-border commerce.

“Our growing collaboration in energy, infrastructure, and private sector investment reflects the ever-growing strength of the US‑Angola relationship,” Trump stated, expressing optimism for future partnerships.

Angola and the US established diplomatic relations in 1993 following the end of Angola’s civil war.

Since then, bilateral ties have expanded across sectors including oil and gas, health, education and governance.

The US is one of Angola’s largest trading partners, with American companies playing a significant role in the country’s energy and infrastructure development.
